State Standards;

      Describe the lives of free blacks and the laws that limited their freedom and economic opportunities. 

    3.3 Compare and contrast motivations and reactions of literary characters from different historical eras   confronting similar situations or conflicts

     

Goals;

Students will study a map of the United States that shows the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. With the use of the computers, they will determine which states were free and which states were slave states.

 

Materials;

Novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Computers

 

Lesson;

Review homework for understanding

Copy vocabulary list for chpts 14-18

Introduce chapters 14-18

Use map to identify the Mississippi and Ohio rivers

Divide class into small groups

Research free and slave state

Read chapters 14-15 in class

Groups will take notes on reading

Discuss reading as a class

 

Evaluation

Students will read chapters 14-18 and complete the homework packet.
