CA Standards:
3.3 Compare and contrast motivations and reactions of literary characters from different historical eras confronting similar situations or conflicts. 3.4 Analyze the relevance of the setting (e.g., place, time, customs) to the mood, tone, and meaning of the text. 3.6 Identify significant literary devices (e.g., metaphor, symbolism, dialect, irony) that define a writer's style and use those elements to interpret the work. 3.7 Analyze a work of literature, showing how it reflects the heritage, traditions, attitudes, and beliefs of its author. (Biographical approach)
Goal:
Introduce students to the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and explain the time period, setting, and the language used in the story.
Materials:
Books, homework packet
Introduction:
I will ask students if they are familiar with Mark Twain or any of his novels. I will read the introduction to the book and answer any questions.
Lesson:
- Handout books
- Discuss author
- Read intro
- Read and listen as class takes turns reading chapters 1 and 2 aloud.
Assessment:
Students will complete homework packet covering chapters read in class and additional chapters assigned as homework.
